Louisa Collin, Support Worker in County Durham Floating Support
Louisa says: “I qualified as a social worker July 2013 and began working for [Humankind] in September 2013, as a support worker for Step2 Project. when the project came to an end, I was offered a position within our independent living unit.
“This is working with 16-25 year olds, some who are very vulnerable and require tenancy support to live independently. This can include pre-tenancy, supporting the clients to register with housing solutions as homeless, register with Durham Key Options and look for alternative accommodation. As well as overcoming any barriers which may prevent this such as I.D, rent arrears and criminal convictions.
“Once in accommodation, I support clients to maintain their tenancy by helping them to understand their rights and responsibilities as a tenant, apply for relevant benefits, set up utilities and access grants for furniture and white goods.
“I also sign post clients to other services in relation to other aspects of their life such as training/education and employment, substance misuse and mental health. During my time at [Humankind] I have progressed from Support Worker to Project Worker and for a short period (covering maternity leave) I was Acting Senior Practitioner.
“It’s my passion to help others, to have a positive impact on their lives and to make a difference. This job gives me that satisfaction. I would highly recommend working for [Humankind].”
