Barnsley’s Recovery Ramblers experience the therapeutic benefits of nature

“I really notice the effects on people who use our services when we’re out in the open air. Their fear and stress levels are noticeably reduced, and I’m also aware anger levels drop significantly."

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme is nature, and to celebrate the positive effects of being out and about, Barnsley’s Recovery Ramblers revealed how nature is helping them overcome their drug or alcohol use.

Barnsley Recovery Steps BRIC worker Adrian Moran leads the Recovery Ramblers. He said: “The group tries to venture out each week (when not in lockdown) to the great outdoors to immerse ourselves in nature.

“We really appreciate the therapeutic intervention that nature provides, and we get to experience all five ways to wellbeing; namely Connecting, being Active, Learning, Giving and Mindfulness.

“I really notice the effects on people who use our services when we’re out in the open air. Their fear and stress levels are noticeably reduced, and I’m also aware anger levels drop significantly. How can you be angry when surrounded by the beauty of nature?”

Adrian also believes that getting out into a natural environment enables The Recovery Ramblers to appreciate the green environment, helping them feel more optimistic and refreshed, with many members commenting that the natural, green surroundings on their walks signify health and new beginnings.

The Recovery Ramblers group is just one activity provided by Barnsley Recovery Steps, the drug and alcohol recovery service delivered by Humankind on behalf of Barnsley Metropolitan Council.
