Individual Placement Support
Our Individual Placement Support (IPS) service offers intensive, personalised employment support to people accessing our services.
Individual Placement Support (IPS) is an evidence-based employment support service that is integrated into substance use services and aims to help people find and retain employment.
IPS involves intensive, personalised support, a rapid job search and, for those who secure employment, continuing in-work support. After initially launching as a Government pilot project at Humankind’s service in Staffordshire, we have now been commissioned to deliver the programme in South Tyneside and Gateshead, Durham, Cumbria, Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale and Barnsley.
The embedded service works alongside our drug and alcohol treatment services with IPS Employment Specialists providing individually tailored support to help people find and choose the right job for them and stay in the role. By using a personalised and strength-based approach to support people, IPS aims to help people find paid jobs within just weeks of being referred to the service.
The IPS programme is open to anyone accessing a service that offers it and Employment Specialists will help by:
- Using their links with local and national employers to connect people to the right job
- Meeting with applicants in the community to develop their career
- Helping applicants develop their CV, prepare for interviews and offer advice on disclosure of information
- Signpost applicants to benefits office or other services to help financially
- Supporting employers to develop their knowledge of substance use and how to tailor job opportunities to meet the needs of people
Once someone has been placed in a role, IPS teams continue to work with both employer and employee to sustain the job placement for as long as possible. In addition to helping people find work, IPS specialists engage directly with employers, building relationships to benefit their clients, and provide expert advice around welfare benefits to help them make informed decisions about work.
Employers who have recruited IPS applicants have found that it’s reduced their recruitment time and costs, helped them find motivated employees who have the right skills and improved retention of staff.
